Innovation News talks book publishing with Kersten Howard

Kersten Howard is a land and sea scape photographer, born and raised in Pembrokeshire, South Wales. He has recently published his first book showing the natural beauty of his home county. Filled with panoramic images of both inland and coastal views; including a forward from landscape photographer Paul Gallagher, extended captions about each location as well as details of the settings and equipment used to capture the image - ‘Under Celtic Skies’ is a must have coffee table book for anyone interested in landscape photography or the county of Pembrokeshire. We spoke to Kersten about the process of getting his first book published. Hi Kersten, thank you for taking the time to speak to us; can we jump right in and start by asking how you found a publisher for your book? I approached some publishers about five years ago, after a friend had a book published, but had no luck getting a contact at the time. I waited about three years and then tried again, this time Graffeg, the independent welsh publisher who published my friends book, agreed to publish a calendar; after that they suggested putting a book proposal together. They have now published my 2015 and 2016 calendars of Wales, a pack of greeting cards (taken from the 2016 calendar) as well as this book. It was a long process to get the contract and took about a year between the contract being agreed and the book arriving from the printers on the 1st September this year, but it was worth it and it gave me time to select and edit the best images from my portfolio. What was the selection process like, did you start with certain images from your archive [...]

Innovation News visits Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2015

The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition is the largest open contemporary art exhibition in the world, showing a mixture of work in different mediums by new and established artists. Innovation News stopped by on the last weekend of the 2015 show to see what caught our eye. In addition to being a fantastic place to introduce yourself to the work of new and established artists. By visiting the summer exhibition, and possibly investing in a piece or two, visitors help to raise funds for the Royal Academy schools and ensure that the tuition remains free. Each year the summer exhibition is curated by a group of Royal Academicians, this year the exhibition co-ordinator was Michael Craig-Martin RA. Bringing his extensive knowledge of colour to the halls of the royal academy. The walls of the three main galleries were painted with bright hues, creating a visual break from the sheer number of pieces on display, as well as providing visual sign posts, enabling the wandering visitor to immediately gage if they had been in that room before. As is tradition at the summer exhibition works flowed through and out of the halls. The first introduction to the show is the large sculptural installation The Dappled Light Of The Sun by Conrad Shawcross RA, dominating the main courtyard and creating an interesting juxtaposition to the classical architecture. At the entrance to the building, Zobop by Jim Lambie, a vibrant interaction with the environment, lead visitors up the stairs and to the entrance of the main galleries. The interior layout was slightly different than in previous years. Some of the rooms having been rearranged, the print spaces seemed to have a higher billing this time. The layout on the [...]

Innovation News; In conversation With David Osborn

We Spoke to Photoshop Extaordinaire, David Osborn about his images, what makes a good photograph and his new Photoshop workshops If you visited the Innova Art stand at FESPA in May, or have seen some pictures from the show, you may have noticed some impressive city scenes printed large scale on the stand. These images, from various locations worldwide were created by the London based photographer David Osborn. David has amazing talent with a camera, but, to create images that take your breath away: he utilizes a wide range of Photoshop techniques. We sat down with him to find out more; Hi David,we had some great reactions to your images on the FESPA stand and would love to learn more about you, your work and your process. To start us off can you tell us how you choose the subjects of your images? My Images are all a mixture of personal work, commissions and images from the workshops I run. I like very clean compositions and for black and white, a real feeling of mood. Black and White allows for much darker moodier images that are my passion. In my personal and workshop work, I love silky smooth tones in the sky and rich shadow detail. Edinburgh by David Osborn When you take an image into Photoshop, do you start with a predetermined plan or does the final image evolve as you work? You have to have an idea of what you are aiming for. There is an element of the unknown always in the creative, but you do need to have a game plan of what you want the image to look like. As you work on the image you create the [...]

Value added by Innova at FESPA Digital 2015

Full service solutions were on show at FESPA 2015 For printers there is always a challenge of how to add value to a print job, Innova Art addressed this need by demonstrating how their customers can expand their print offering by creating set ups, on thier FESPA stand, to show the value added possibilities. Not just with media but with the full range of Innova products. The launch of our new partnership with GOframe was a perfect pairing for a mini lab driven by Shiraz Software. GOframe is a unique framing solution for creating stretched canvases in minutes. Paired with any of the Innova aqueous or Eco-Solvent compatible canvases you can create matte, semi-gloss or gloss finishes with next to no effort. Select the best length of bars, or create an image sized to fit, starting at 4” up to 60” long with lots of options in between, as well as an option to cut bars to custom lengths – there will be no sizes out of your reach with GOframe. Position your bars centrally on the back of your canvas, using the patented corner system to ensure the tape does not touch before you’re ready. Apply pressure to attach the bars to the canvas and lift up to outer edges to form the canvas sides. Secure everything in place with the u-shaped pins provided and you’re done. Finished canvases can then be collected together to form interesting displays using Collage Clips from GOframe. For even more variety you can use JetMaster Paper by Innova to print your images – available in smooth or canvas embossed, it is durable enough to fold and stretch without cracking and can create an additional pricing option for those [...]

GOframe is an innovative canvas stretching system that does not require canvas pliers or glue, the bars are supplied in different thicknesses, lengths ranging from 4" to 60" and can even be cut and joined together to create bespoke sizes. Demonstrations of the system will be taking place throughout the day on Stand Z15, Hall 9 at FESPA. Create any range of finishes on your canvas wraps by varying the media that you mount on them, why no try one of our new canvases from the Graphic Art range? These four new products were previewed at Sign and Digital UK earlier this year and with the choice of aqueous or Eco-solvent compatible there is no need to change your equipment to get fantastic print quality. GOframe can also be used with JetMaster papers for an alternative finish. JetMaster Direct Print Photo Wraps and Photo Panels will also be demonstrated throughout the course of the show.
