Recently a new exhibition by Russian photographer Sergey Maltsev was on show in The Central House of Artists, Moscow Russia.

The exhibition called Images Of India closed on January 10th 2016 featured more than 40 works, all printed by Melange-S on Innova Art paper.

India evokes all kinds of images which are embodied in art by each artist. Sergey Maltsev uses a unique theme: architecture of India, both traditional and colonial. The architecture of the area emphasizes the mixing of cultures and times. Sometimes it seems that the photograph has been taken many years ago… at others it seems like it could have been just yesterday. Through this series of photographs, Sergey Maltsev has captured a snap shot of time. The combinations of textures in India are stunningly highlighted in various parts of the country, from the Observatory in Jaipur to the streets of Mumbai. People on the streets are natural and seem snatched from their daily activities completely at random. None of the images in the exhibition were staged. The photographer simply took long walks through the streets of towns and captured the moments of ordinary life.

Melange-S, the Innova print center in Russia, produced the prints for the exhibition; watch the video below for a quick tour of the show.

“India is able to surprise anyone with its bright colors, even the most discerning traveler, no country has caused in consequence I have so many antithetical feelings and emotions! For my new exhibition, I needed to pick up the print media that best transmits local coloring of India.

About 2 years ago I became acquainted with the materials for printing Innova Art. And since then, regularly use Fine Art paper by Innova for printing my photos. In the test lab of company Melange-S we did tests on different papers with a 12-color large format printer Canon ImagePROGRAF iPF9400. The best results we achieved with paper Innova FinePrint® White Gloss (F-type) 300gsm (IFA09) as the print color and black-and-white images. “

The preparation for the show started with a selection of test prints to determine the best media for each image.

Portraits of artists at work or in their studios, photographed by Jim McHugh, hung alongside original works of art by many of them; Experience 19: TOUCH is not to be missed.

Living and working in Los Angeles over the past forty years, Jim has documented the city of angels and formed lasting friendships with many artists, following them throughout their careers. Those friendships are captured in this show; portraits of the artists, photographed by Jim using big view film cameras, hang next to original pieces from the artists’ studios. Telling a story of these artistic relationships as well as capturing the magic of the art scene in LA over the last four decades.

The work of Jim McHugh represents a true expression of digital innovation meeting traditional film photography. The appeal of using film in the 21st century means that Jim McHugh gets to spend a lot of time with his subjects, capturing the experience in his own individual style. A long-time fan of Innova digital media, many of Jim’s original film transparencies and Polaroid shots have been transformed into large format digital prints and are displayed in the show on a selection of our archival papers and canvas.

Large format portraits, including a 5×7 foot image of German artist Thomas Demand printed on Innova matte archival canvas, chosen by Jim as it ‘gives a visual feel more like paper.’ This media has been used as the base for a selection of images in the Experience 19: TOUCH exhibition, alongside prints on Innova FibaPrint® papers – the digital equivalent to traditional darkroom papers.

One challenge faced by Jim during the production of the exhibition was how to present a series of recent photos of street artists, who Jim met recently. A large 17 foot print featuring these artists, printed on Innova FibaPrint® Ultra Smooth Gloss 285gsm, was released at the LA art show earlier this year. Jim’s challenge was how to present individual portraits of the artists for Experience 19: TOUCH using a contemporary presentation technique, in keeping with the cutting edge style of the subjects featured in the portrait series. The answer came in the JetMaster® Photo Wrap, a convenient alternative to canvas wraps. Presented on 16×20” frames the series of nine images were mounted by Jim, his first time using the JetMaster® image display system; ‘it takes a moment to get proficient

[the prints] lay down flat, no air bubbles… very finished looking when done, especially because you can put something up last minute and it looks professional – not cheap…great as gifts instead of a frame, I really like them [and] will get some more.’

A commentary is formed on Los Angeles as a city and the diversity of artists working there, this is a unique insight into what is created when two artists get together to capture a moment of history, juxtaposed with original artist works. It is also a chance to meet Jim McHugh, who will be at the exhibition most Saturdays until the end of January, discussing his work, signing posters, and sharing Polaroid’s and other materials from his archive. Curator Edward Goldman, given the task of creating an exhibition reflecting the spirit of adventure and diversity prevalent in artistic LA, has brought the rarely seen images from the McHugh archives to the public eye. The KCRW art critic was inspired to create the show by a visit to the home of Jim McHugh. He had the opportunity to view his archive of artists’ studio portraits alongside original artworks by the subjects of the photographs, collected by Jim McHugh over the years.

Together they are celebrating the artistic spirit of the city and the artists who transformed it into an artistic capital of the world.

Travelling the world and photographing the remains left by long forgotten people, as well as the bustling metropolises’ of cities populated by thousands or millions of people looking to make their mark on the world. Temkin is looking to tell a little bit more of the story about where we come from and possibly hinting at where we may be heading. The work on show covers multiple series of works by the photographer, including: Relics – an exploration of items and architecture left behind, Private Places – a look into the gardens of some Chicago residents and Rooftop – Brad Temkin’s most recent work, capturing the city from above, revealing hidden spaces on the roofs of city buildings. Rooftop: Photography is now available to purchase as a book from Radius Books, with a forward written by Architect Roger Schickedantz and the photographs by Brad are interspersed with writings by authors John Rohrbach and Steven Peck.

“This architecture is a new artistic medium in which nature and humanity contribute equally.
Commenting on his work Temkin said; “As we are drawn to making a more comfortable living space, our own ignorance often leads to issues of self-impairment. When these issues are revealed, we come together as a group, and our grace and ingenuity soar. Positive and profound change comes when groups of people work together to implement their common vision. I am interested in how this experience is transformed through the camera, and my mission is to communicate these ideas. My pictures draw poetic attention to the beauty that already exists in the world, and more specifically, the landscape – be it natural or urban – and how what we leave behind changes its meaning”
