Explore behind the scenes of Last Chance To Paint: Person of the Forest at Salon de la Photo 2019. Visit Innova Art on stand C012 in Pavilion 5.1 to see documentary photography of John Dyer’s latest adventure.
In September 2019 John Dyer and the Last Chance To Paint team travelled to Borneo to meet the Penan tribe and spend time with the Orangutan Foundation. They were joined live on their travels by many schools worldwide that connected with the experience via social media and satellite links. This November, visitors to Salon de la Photo 2019 will be able to relive their experiences.
Raising awareness of the impact of climate change, Last Chance To Paint aims to engage children through art and music. Encouraging them to form a lasting connection with the world around them and make a difference.
During their time in the rainforest, the Last Chance To Paint team met the Penan tribe in their now permanent village home. Whilst in the village they spent time with the tribal elders who remember the time when the Penan were able to move freely and live by hunting and foraging in the rainforest. The team also spent time with the children in the village. Many of whom have never experienced the migratory existence of the tribe. At the local school, John Dyer held workshops where he and the children expressed what it was like to live in the rainforest using traditional artist mediums.
Moving on from the Penan tribe, the team then relocated to southern Borneo to spend time with the Orangutan Foundation. Here John Dyer spent time painting the Orangutans in their natural habitat. The team also learnt about how deforestation for palm oil plantations impacts on the local wildlife. Forest fires and illegal logging are gradually reducing the area of rainforest which is safe for Orangutans to inhabit.
Visitors to Salon de la Photo 2019 can experience a snapshot of this journey first hand. A selection of images from Last Chance To Paint: Person of the Forest will be on display on the Innova Art stand C012 in pavilion 5.1.
