There are many terms used to describe the archival quality of inkjet papers and every artist wants their work to stand the test of time. The problem is that there are many contributing factors when considering the archival quality of an image printed on inkjet fine art paper.

The first thing to consider is the paper itself

The term acid free has long been associated with archival quality when it comes to paper, but historically this terminology has only applied to the base paper without any type of coating applied. The base material should be manufactured using pure alpha cellulose fibre, pure cotton fibre or a combination of these two materials. This will ensure that the paper base is pH 7 or above (acid free).

A paper that contains lignin cannot be acid free as lignin is a naturally occurring acid within plant fibres. It is the lignin content in newsprint paper which causes it to yellow and go brittle over time.

For inkjet papers the coating must also be considered in combination with the base materials. The coating is applied to the surface of the paper base to ensure that the ink is absorbed just the right amount. Once a coating is applied, the pH value (acidity) of the entire paper changes. The only way for this to be addressed is for manufacturers to ensure that the coatings used on their papers are as close to acid neutral as possible and to supply the pH value of the total paper (base and coating) rather than just the base.

The second thing to consider is how the image is printed

The ink you print with has an effect on how long an image will last, no matter what the archival properties of the paper itself are. Inkjet fine art prints are commonly produced using either dye or pigment inks, each of these have different features. Dye inks usually produce a wider colour gamut than pigment inks, however the colours have been shown to fade faster than pigment inks under the same conditions.

The permanence (lifespan) of dye inks is constantly improving, however, most printers recommend the use of pigment inks when creating archival inkjet fine art print editions. This is why some inkjet fine art (Giclée) prints are also described as archival pigment prints. Speak to your ink manufacturer to get details of the lifespan of the inks you use.

Finally think about how the image is stored and displayed

When presenting inkjet fine art prints it is important that they are handled correctly. This is to ensure they maintain the archival quality of the paper and ink combination.

Papers can absorb chemicals from their environment. Loose prints should be kept flat and interleaved with acid free tissue paper. If prints are stored in wooden drawers, line the drawers with acid free materials: if the wooden drawer contains lignin this will effect your prints. When mounting prints ready for framing, ensure that any tapes, glues and mount boards used are acid free.

Light can be harmful to inkjet prints and cause them to fade faster than expected. Where possible do not hang prints in direct sunlight and use glass that has UV blocking properties. Temperature and humidity can also ruin a perfect print. The ideal conditions for inkjet fine art prints is a consistent temperature between 15ºC and 20ºC with a relative humidity level of 40-60%. Fluctuations in temperature can cause the print to deteriorate faster than expected and high moisture levels invite mould to grow and may cause the paper surface to cockle.

Archival quality checklist

• Ensure that the pH value of inkjet papers refers to the base and the coating, not just the base.
• Ensure that you are using inks with a proven long life span to print your images.
• Ensure that all the materials used to mount, frame and store finished prints are acid free.
• Display your own prints out of direct light, in an environment with stable temperature and humidity levels. If you sell prints, advise your customers to do the same.

With seminars and workshops focussed on getting to know the latest kit, or meeting the biggest names in photography, as well as exhibitions and a trade event. Salon de la Photo 2017 lived up to its well established reputation as a one stop shop for all things photography.

Thousands of visitors attended Salon de la Photo 2017 and the Innova stand was buzzing with activity. Demonstrations took place of the full range of image display products and there was excitement surrounding the GOframe canvas stretching system. Available for the first time in France the GOframe 1500 Pro Bar allows users of all abilities to create professional stretched canvases without the need for specialist tools or training.

Also popular for image display were Pinchbook Photo Books. “People love the versatility of these covers,” says James Cannone, Sales Account Manager at Innova Art, “they think it’s great that the same cover can be used multiple times so they end up buying a book for each size print they produce.” Allowing users to quickly replace the contents of the book by simply folding back the cover, Pinchbook Photo Books are available in cloth and leather material options.

The artwork on the Innova stand at Salon de la Photo 2017 came from the archives of Los Angeles based photographer Jim McHugh. Featuring celebrity portraits captured over the course of his career as well as some more recent collaborations with urban artists Prime and Big Sleeps. Visitors were impressed by the cross section of techniques on show: from traditional film negatives scanned in and printed digitally, digital captures printed at various sizes to polaroid photographs that have been recaptured and printed, then – with an innovative twist, painted on by Prime and Big Sleeps using their own signature lettering styles local to L.A.

The marriage of traditional and digital techniques reflected in the work of Jim McHugh was the perfect partner to showcase the Innova Editions® range. Built on the fusion of traditional paper making techniques combined with innovative inkjet coating technology Innova Editions® features inkjet fine art papers from Fabriano; Europe’s oldest paper mill as well as FibaPrint® surfaces; inkjet photo papers specifically designed to replicate the surfaces found in traditional chemical darkrooms.

Throughout the three days, the trade show floor of Photo Plus Expo 2017 was buzzing with action. From seminars and workshops to photo walks and portfolio reviews: photographers who attended were not disappointed.

On the Innova Art stand Prime and Big Sleeps were busy creating original pieces by painting onto YouTac® Textile and showing visitors their signature styles. Photographer Jim McHugh stepped in to answer questions about the photographs on the stand and supplied polaroid images for Big Sleeps and Prime to embellish. Jim McHugh, Big Sleeps and Prime also signed prints every day, giving attendees the opportunity to take away a print on Innova paper, signed by all three artists, as well as learn more about what inspired these three creatives to start working together.

Elsewhere on the stand the Innova team was on hand. Helping visitors with queries about choosing and testing inkjet paper types. Particularly popular was the print table, featuring papers from the Innova Editions® range. Six surfaces, all OBA free and meeting museum quality archival standards. All the papers within the range were available for Photo Plus Expo 2017 attendees to touch and feel. A limited selection of images was printed on each surface: visitors could see the same image on all six surfaces and visually understand how the paper finish influences the image.

Continuing the interactive experience, the full range of JetMaster® image display products from Innova was on show. With a series on instruction videos playing on a loop visitors could watch how the products were made as well as see the finished articles around the stand. Moniker Art Fair 2017 was buzzing with activity from a full programme of talks and events and Innova’s inkjet fine art media took centre stage for multiple exhibits.

In the installation hall, US mixed media artist Ian Kuali’i created a large scale installation from hand cut Innova art paper. Visitors to the fair could walk through and around the exhibit -becoming a part of the art. Surrounding this impressive sight was some of Ian’s stunning original artwork: mixed media collages overlaid with paper cut outs, as well as a whole series of repurposed spray cans, each with their own paper cut out applied.

On the Innova Art stand, the walls were adorned with reproductions of unique collaborative pieces created by a Los Angeles based trio: photographer Jim McHugh and urban artists Big Sleeps and Prime. Utilising McHugh’s polaroid photographs of Los Angeles, printed on Innova FibaPrint® Ultra Smooth Gloss 385gsm (IFA 49), Prime and Big Sleeps use their own distinctive lettering styles to work over the top and create urban artworks inspired by the new noir scene in L.A.

The Innova team also took part in their own collaboration as part of the show. Teaming up with Moniker Art Fair and London based artist Mr. Frivolous to release a special print edition. Commissioned specifically for the fair this year the artwork, drawn by Mr. Frivolous, celebrated the east London art scene. The print edition was printed on Innova Fabriano Printmaking Rag 310gsm, part of the Innova Editions range and given away for free to fair attendees. At selected times of each day, Mr. Frivolous took up residence on the Innova Art stand and customised prints for visitors – creating a unique and personal piece of art for each recipient.
